They say “if you want to go fast go alone and if you want to go far go together” and I chose the latter. My Travel journey will only make sense if I take people with me. My mission is always to inspire people to travel more and to create a travel movement, so I create activities that will allow people to travel. This Oteniqua 5 day hike has seen me put together an ‘All Girl Squad’ from three different provinces. These include, Western Cape,  Kwazulu-Natal and Gauteng. We all have two things in common, we love travelling and hiking. If that does not confirm that Travelling is a universal language for you, then I do not know what will.

Now meet my Squad….

I am Siphokazi Canca in my dirty thirties I am originally from the Eastern Cape but I live in Kwa-Zulu Natal. I love running, travelling (even though my wallet doesn’t always allow me), shopping and my new hobby is hiking.

Why do you travel?

There is something fascinating to me about discovering new things or doing something new for the first time and travel offers me that. I also love it because you get to discover new things about yourself in the process of new experiences.

When did your love for hiking start?

Growing up in rural Eastern Cape I have always hiked with my mother when visiting my cousin’s house but I only realized it now that, that was hiking. Back then I called it visiting family but we went through mountain trails to get there so essentially it was hiking. However, the love affair with hiking only started earlier this year after I conquered Lion’s head with a friend. I knew right there that it was something I wanted to do again.

What did you do in preparation for this hike?

Nothing, was I suppose to prepare? Well I have kept to my gym routine so I can only hope that it was preparation enough.

Are you ready?

I am excited, so I think that makes me ready.

My name is Ncumisa Jonas, born and raised in a small town called Ngqamakhwe in the EC, 35 years of age. I love hiking, travelling and exploring new places.

Why do you travel?

I like to experience new places, different cultures and just discovering what the world out there has to offer. I also enjoy experiencing different cuisine.

When did your love for hiking start?

It actually started at varsity but I could not afford proper hiking shoes back then so I left it till about a few years ago.

What did you do in preparation for this hike?

I hiked up Platteklip Gorge on table mountain at least once a week for the past few weeks leading to the hike. I also did a 20km hike in Stellenbosch. I also went for beach jogs whenever possible.

Are you ready?

I am definitely not 100% ready but partially, Yes.

Tell us about yourself?

I’m S’lindi Mhlongo, a 35 year old from Zululand that lives in Gauteng and  enjoys reading, travelling, outdoors, good food…I’m all about “experience”!

Why do you travel?

I believe in the Zulu saying “ukuhamba ukubona” which can be translated as “travelling is to see”, meaning travelling opens ones eyes, thus exposing one to many possibilities.

When did your love for hiking start?

A while back, I used to just hike when I happened to find myself in places with trails, now I go out of my way to look for hiking trails!

What did you do in preparation for this hike?

I have tried to hike twice a month in different terrains, hopefully I will be fit enough. There’s a very strong will therefore, there’s definitely going to be a way!

Are you ready?

Ready as I can be. Let it be Friday morning already!

Tell us about yourself?

I am Noxolo Kapela, a travel enthusiast born and bred in Butterworth, a very small but wealthy town in the Eastern Cape and currently reside in Johannesburg. I enjoy everything adventurous, I am an adrenaline junky of note, I sometimes even surprise myself with the things I have done and those I want to do in the future. When I am not travelling I enjoy spending time with Friends and my beloved Daughter,  though I also enjoy my ME time.

Why do you travel?

I travel because it gave me a purpose in life, I love sharing my stories at the end of each trip. I travel because being an inspiration to others is on top of my list. I love hearing people saying they also want to travel and see new places and just live their best lives. I also travel because I get to be in touch with my true being. With every experience or activity I embark on I learn a little bit more about myself. Lastly, I travel because travelling is the only way I know how to live my life, nothing makes me happier.

When did your love for hiking start?

Growing up I have always enjoyed walking long distances, however when two years ago me and two of my Friends started hiking once a month, it hit me that this is what I enjoyed the most and I have never looked back. I have since made it a habit to hike twice a month. I have also started including hiking trails in all my itineraries.

What did you do in preparation for this hike?

Honestly, I could have done better. Apart from hiking twice a month not much effort have been put into this, hopefully I will not regret it. My fitness levels are nowhere near where I would have loved them to be. However, mentally I am very much prepared as I have to be there for the ‘Squad’ because they will be tackling a 5 day hike for the first time.

Are you ready?

Yessss, I have been looking forward to this for the longest time. Putting it together has been hectic but the kind of hectic that also brings a smile to your face. I cannot wait!!
